Cold Weather Yurts: A Closer Look at Reflective Insulation

Here in Michigan, we are well aware of the importance of being protected from the elements throughout the long winter months. A recent blast of arctic air had windchills dipping down to -15 degrees. The yurts we build have to be able to handle even the toughest onslaughts of cold weather.

The key to such an effective barrier against cold temperatures is our insulation system. We use aluminum coated reflective insulation that reflects 97% of heat, making it the most effective insulating barrier available on the market.  It would take more than 10” of conventional insulation to provide the same effect that less than one inch of reflective insulation creates!

Benefits of reflective insulation:

  • Reflects 97% of heat
  • Provides a radiant barrier
  • Waterproof, humidity resistant
  • Impermeable aluminum coating
  • Fire resistant
  • Lightweight, easy to work with
  • Mold and fungus resistant
  • Asbestos free
  • Ozone friendly
  • Keeps structures warm in the winter and cool in the summer

Just how trusted is this insulation? It is actually the same material that has been used by NASA for decades. When looking for an insulating barrier for astronauts during spacewalks, NASA turned to a relatively new, lightweight product on the market – reflective insulation. This product kept the astronauts’ body temperature within the suit, while protecting them from drastic temperature fluctuations and radiant heat from the sun. This same system is still in use in all spacesuits and spacecraft today.

With this protective shell, you can trust that your yurt will be a warm sanctuary even on the coldest nights. So, throw another log in the woodstove and settle in to watch the snowflakes dance through the air outside. Enjoy all the frozen beauty of winter from the cozy confines of your yurt!
